Why I'm Running

Dear Neighbor,

The world in which we live deeply distributes talent, however, doesn’t equally distribute opportunity. My oldest brother -- same parents, same general upbringing,  same innate ability as me-- was relegated to attending poor and failing neighborhood schools while growing up. He did not graduate from college and has been unable to pursue his dreams. Instead he has spent the better part of the last 20 years working minimum wage jobs working 12+ hours a day just to make ends meet. Too many students in Ward 5 are bound for a similar fate simply because they have not been afforded a good enough education.

We can do better. We must do better.

In the District of Columbia, less than a third of students are rated as “college and career ready” despite recent test gains, and it was recently revealed that the lack of oversight of our schools has allowed widespread misrepresentation of student truancy and graduation rates. Ward 5 is DC’s largest ward, accounting for approximately 14% of the District’s school age children, yet less than 20% of students are meeting proficiency standards and some schools have been charged with fraudulently conflating thousands of student records.

We can do better. We must do better.

As a third generation educator, award-winning teacher, business owner, and founder of Global Millennials for Progress, I stand uniquely ready to serve Ward 5 to improve our schools. Ward 5 deserves trusted leadership and a representative on the School Board of Education that is deeply invested in improving the life outcomes of all of our students, especially those who have been most underserved.

Therefore, I ask you to join me and #InvestIn5.

Yours in Service,

Zachary Parker

Candidate, State Board of Education Ward 5 Representative
